Take Back Our Buses!

Tim Bowles, West of England Mayor & Marvin Rees, Mayor of Bristol

Private companies control Bristol’s bus network. They dictate prices, routes and timetables. The result has been catastrophic - passenger numbers have plummeted, prices have risen and services have shrunk.

Tim Bowles, the Mayor of the West of England, has the power to take our buses back under public control, enabling us to cap prices, set timetables and extend coverage where it’s needed, rather than where it is profitable for greedy bus companies. Tim Bowles is yet to commit.

First Bus West of England could be taken over by a worker buyout, with backing from Bristol City Council, that would bring the buses into worker and public control.

We, the undersigned, demand that Tim Bowles and Marvin Rees (West of England & Bristol Mayors) and Bristol, Bath & North East Somerset and South Gloucestershire Councils:

- Support a worker-led buyout of First Bus, with the Councils each taking a stake to bring buses back into partial public ownership
- Launch a consultation as a first step to introducing a franchising system if a worker-led buyout doesn't happen
- Manage contracts carefully under any franchising arrangement to guarantee workers' conditions and good levels of service for the most deprived areas in the region
