Teach Safe Relationships Act

U.S. Senate

The U.S. Senate could help significantly reduce sexual assault and intimate partner violence in schools across America.

Sens. Tim Kaine (D-Va.) and Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.) have introduced the Teach Safe Relationships Act, which would add age-appropriate lessons about topics like consent and intimate partner violence to comprehensive health classes for high school students. Young people shouldn't have to wait to arrive at college to learn about consent and healthy, respectful intimate relationships. Those topics should be included right along with the crucial information about STIs and pregnancy teenagers are already learning in high school.

Tell your Senator:

Please cosponsor the Teach Safe Relationships Act, which would improve high school sex education curriculum by incorporating information that teaches students to recognize and prevent intimate partner violence. This curriculum would also provide education for students about consent as well as emotional health and well being in relationships.

This legislation could help significantly reduce sexual assault and intimate partner violence in schools across America.

Women ages 16-24 are the most likely to experience sexual violence, and it's a huge problem especially on college campuses, where one in five survive sexual assault. In recent months, two state-wide education systems have passed mandatory affirmative consent rules for higher education campuses, and private colleges across the country are incorporating education about preventing sexual violence into student programming.

Students shouldn't have to wait to arrive at college to learn about consent--information about consent and healthy, respectful intimate relationships should be included right along with the crucial information about STIs and pregnancy teenagers are already learning in high school. And the Teach Safe Relationships Act will insure that age-appropriate, comprehensive information is presented to students in their high school health classes.

Show your support for preventing sexual violence. Please co-sponsor the Teach Safe Relationships Act in the U.S. Senate.
