Tell Boehner and McConnell: Bring the Campus Accountability and Safety Act to a Vote

John Boehner, Mitch McConnell

Ending sexual assault on campus is going to take many partners—students, administrators, faculty, staff, unions, advocacy groups, law enforcement and our elected officials. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.), along with a bipartisan group of 15 senators, has introduced the Campus Accountability and Safety Act. If passed, this legislation will flip the incentives and make it in schools’ immediate best interest to take proactive steps to protect their students and rid their campuses of sexual predators.

Provisions of the bipartisan legislation include:

  • New campus resources and support services for student survivors;
  • Minimum training standards for on-campus personnel;
  • New historic transparency requirements;
  • Campus accountability and coordination with law enforcement; and
  • Enforceable Title IX penalties and stiffer penalties for Clery Act violations.

It is time to end the scourge of rape and sexual assault at America’s colleges, provide survivors with the resources they need to recover, and hold offenders accountable.
