Tell Chase Bank: Stop Funding Climate Change!

Chase bank has committed to aligning their practice to the Paris Agreement. But they still lend hundreds of billions of dollars to the fossil fuel industry. This open letter will be sent to CEO Jamie Dimon and other executives and is part of a nation-wide campaign urging Chase Bank to divest from fossil fuels. For more information, see Bill McKibben’s Op-Ed in the New York Times: “Want to do something about climate change? Follow the money” (11 January, 2020).

Dear Mr. Dimon,

You certainly do not need us to tell you that Chase Bank has lent over $269 billion to the fossil fuel industry since the Paris Agreement was signed in 2015.

But I do want to tell you that I am outraged.

As New York City residents, we know that banking at Chase is convenient. But this convenience pales in light of the fact that Chase is profiting from climate change, from the destruction of life on earth. Our children and future generations will suffer the consequences.

This is unacceptable.

I am writing to urge you, in the strongest possible terms, to divest from the fossil fuel industry. In October 2020, Chase made a commitment to align with the Paris Agreement. But Chase continues to fund companies building new coal plants, gas terminals and tar sands, pipelines, companies drilling for fossil fuels in the Arctic, and more.

The recent IPCC report, a synthesis of over 6,000 peer-reviewed studies on climate science, says we must reduce our global greenhouse gas pollution by at least 45% by 2030 to keep global warming below 1.5°C.

You have the power to #stopthemoneypipeline. You can make Chase walk the talk. In the meantime, we will call you, write to you, and otherwise push you to do the right thing.

I, the undersigned, look forward to hearing a response.

Sincerely,
