Tell Congress: Defend Democracy, Invest in Us

U.S. Senate and House of Representatives

What we saw play out on January 6 on our nation’s Capitol were symptoms of the white supremacist mindset that has occupied the White House for the past four years. The armed white vigilantes who stormed the Capitol, threatened staff and elected officials and destroyed government property must be held accountable! The law enforcement officers and members of Congress who were complicit and incited the violence must be held accountable! Our hearts are with the countless organizers and activists who were met with brutality for protesting our nation’s brutality against Black people.

While it is welcome news that Congress has certified Biden as our next President, we know that we cannot take Trump’s word for it that there will be a “smooth transition.” Following his inflammatory comments that this is “only the beginning” in the fight for MAGA, our leaders in government must ensure our safety as Trump continues to embolden his violent base. We know that Trump will stop at nothing to maintain control and we must not take his dog-whistles lightly. That’s why we support the pending articles of impeachment against Trump sponsored by Rep. Ilhan Omar and Rep. Ayanna Pressley to ensure a just transition. We also support Rep. Cori Bush’s resolution to expel members of Congress who oppose the legal results of the election, and demand a full investigation into the security response to the events at the Capitol.

We need our leaders to take a strong stance against the violence we witnessed. Our nation is struggling to recover from decades of systemic abuses and the Covid-19 pandemic and the focus should be on containing Covid-19, supporting victims and their families and equitably rebuilding our economy. We can justly rebuild and heal our nation by investing in the community and condemning the actions of domestic terrorists.

Add your name to send a message to Congress and our state leaders that there is no place for hate in New York or anywhere else. Our communities have suffered enough–we need covid relief and restorative justice. It’s time to rebuild stronger together.
