Tell Congress: Pass a Wall Street Sales Tax

U.S Congress

Wall Street actors buy and sell millions of shares on the stock market every day, making billions, but they don’t pay taxes on any of those transactions. Meanwhile, nearly half of Americans don’t own any stock at all, but we still pay sales tax on all types of goods and services. It’s not fair, and we can do better.

The same rules that apply to us should apply to Wall Street traders, which is why we need a Wall Street sales tax, or Financial Transactions Tax. A Wall Street sales tax would impose a small tax on transactions in stocks, bonds, or derivatives.

Enough is enough! Wall Street actors buy and sell millions of shares on the stock market every day, making billions, but they don’t pay taxes on any of those transactions. Meanwhile, half of Americans don’t own any stock at all, but we still pay sales tax on all types of goods and services.

We call on Congress to pass a Wall Street sales tax (such as the Inclusive Prosperity Act of 2019 or the Wall Street Tax Act of 2019) to implement a tiny tax on Wall Street speculation. Over a decade it could raise between $777 billion and $2.4 trillion, depending on the rate, which could be invested in white, black and brown working families and create millions of good-paying jobs.
