Tell Congress: Stop “pay to play” politics

Speaking to a room full of bankers, Mick Mulvaney―Donald Trump’s director of the Office of Management and Budget―recently stated, “We had a hierarchy in my office in Congress. If you're a lobbyist who never gave us money, I didn't talk to you. If you're a lobbyist who gave us money, I might talk to you.”
Most Americans reacted with outrage to Mulvaney’s statement. But it’s not enough to merely react in horror to the fact that someone dared to say what we already knew to be true: There’s a broken, “pay to play” system in Washington.
Members of Congress, especially those who aspire to leadership positions, spend too much time soliciting campaign contributions from those trying to influence their decisions as lawmakers. But there is a solution.
Congress should act immediately to curb registered lobbyists’ campaign contributions. Lobbyists should not be in the business of holding fundraisers for Members of Congress or bundling contributions for congressional campaigns.

In a democracy, making laws should be based on the power of ideas, not simply the size of the checkbook behind them. We demand that Congress act to prohibit “pay to play” transactional giving, which hands power to the highest bidder. Immediately pass legislation that curbs registered lobbyists’ campaign contributions. Lobbyists should not be in the business of holding fundraisers for Members of Congress or bundling contributions for congressional campaigns.
