Tell Cumbria Pension Fund that Time is Up for Investing in Fossil Fuels

Westmorland and Furness Council

Marcus Spiske, open-source

Cumbria Pension Fund is run by Westmorland and Furness Council, which claims it is ‘at the forefront of tackling climate change’. But the fund is holding assets in the fossil fuel sector worth over 60 million pounds.

Time is up for investing in fossil fuels. On the one hand, investing in fossil fuels is supporting run-away climate change with disastrous consequences for humanity and biodiversity. On the other hand, it is financially risky to invest in fossil fuel companies as they are expected to decline in the long term and could suddenly lose value at any point.

This huge chunk of money should instead be invested in sectors that support a safe future, such as renewable energy and low carbon infrastructure. Five UK local authorities have now committed to phase out fossil fuels completely from their pension funds. Cumbria needs to catch up!
