Tell George P. Bush - Fund Flood Mitigation in Houston and Harris County!

Land Commissioner George P. Bush

Just days before 288 flooded due to massive May storms, Land Commissioner George P. Bush announced that Houston and Harris County would receive $0 of the $4.3 billion in federal flood mitigation dollars awarded by the state.

Harris County was the only county in Texas that experienced flood disasters three years in a row in 2015, 2016, and 2017, and more than half of all damage from Harvey occurred within Harris County borders.

Flooding isn't a partisan issue - that's why Republican and Democratic Council members, County Commissioners, State Representatives, and State Senators have all called for Bush and the General Land Office to reconsider.

This year, state Republicans have taken every opportunity to attack the Democratic-run cities. When Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo and Commissioners Rodney Ellis and Adrian Garcia have fought for common-sense public health measures, a reliable electric grid, and protections for workers on the job, Republican officials have responded by passing laws that take away local control and punish our communities for political differences.

Now, George P. Bush is cravenly trying to shift blame for his actions onto the Biden Administration. He's still putting politics over keeping us safe.

Hurricane season is just starting, but Houston and Harris County have already experienced large storms that have led to flooding across the city and county.

Our latest floods happened just days after you announced that Houston and Harris County would receive $0 of the $4.3 billion in federal flood mitigation dollars awarded by the state.

Why? Because your office chose to determine allocation of resources in a way that intentionally left working people in Houston and Harris County behind.

Harris County was the only county in Texas that experienced flood disasters three years in a row in 2015, 2016, and 2017, and more than half of all damage from Harvey occurred within Harris County borders. The federal government allocated this money specifically to help the communities that were hardest hit and help our communities prepare for future storms.

Flooding isn't a partisan issue - that's why nearly every Republican and Democratic Council member, County Commissioner, State Representative, and State Senator representing Houston and Harris County have called on you and the General Land Office to reconsider your decision.

We join our voices to their to call on you now to put the safety of your fellow Texans above partisan politics and reconsider your office's allocation of resources to ensure an equitable distribution in areas that are most at risk and most in need.
