Tell Greg Abbott: Ending the Mask Mandate is a Death Sentence for Working Texans

Governor Greg Abbott

On March 2nd, Governor Greg Abbott rescinded his emergency order mandating the wearing of masks indoors in both public offices and private businesses, ignoring CDC guidelines and the clear advice of local public health experts like Dr. Peter Hotez.

The science is clear - mask mandates work. By ignoring the advice of federal, state, and local public health officials, Governor Greg Abbott has decided to put the interests of his billionaire donors ahead of the frontline workers who have risked their lives to keep us safe and fed over the past year.

Only 6.5% of Texans are vaccinated against COVID-19, cases are currently rising, and dangerous COVID variants are spreading across the state. This is no time to relax common-sense health and public safety precautions.

Help us send a clear message to Greg Abbott - ending the mask mandate is a death sentence for working Texans. Reinstate the order immediately and put our health and safety first.

Texas is currently in the midst of a new spike in COVID-19 cases, one of the worst in the country. New variants of the disease have started to circulate in our state, raising concerns among public health officials that current vaccination efforts may not be sufficient to stop the spread of the disease. And only 6.5% of Texans have been vaccinated as of March 2nd, far short of the 80-90% estimated as the benchmark for herd immunity.

Our frontline workers are at the greatest risk. Transit workers have to interact with the public daily to get us from place to place. Grocery workers can't keep us fed if they're working remotely. Firefighers and other first responders can't socially distance when they're performing life-saving CPR. Essential workers need us to mask up to keep them safe and keep our state safe, fed, and moving forward.

We call on you to rescind your decision to end your emergency orders relating to the COVID-19 pandemic, and immediately renew the statewide mask mandate for all public spaces.
