Hoffa is trying to merge New York Local 584 into Local 553, without allowing members their right to vote on the proposed merger.

Teamster members have a right to vote on proposed mergers, except “if a Local Union is not capable of performing its representational functions, due to its financial conditions or where an emergency situation exists.”

In this case, the “emergency situation” is that members have organized a reform slate and are poised to win the Local 584 union election this fall.

Hoffa and Local 553 Secretary-Treasurer Demos Demopoulos are violating the Teamster Constitution to prevent reformers from winning union office.

Local 584 members have the right to vote on any proposed merger and they have a right to elect the leaders of their local union.
