The issue: Compass Business Park wants to build a 2900 acre warehouse facility, known as Northpoint. This land is 1.5 miles east of Route 53 between Joliet and Elwood.

Currently, the timeline is for the plan commission to vote on Feb 24, 2020 and then the Joliet city council will vote on March 17, 2020 for the final vote. This can always change.
⚠️MORE TRUCKS, MORE TRAFFIC! I80, Bridges, Route 53, Route 52 and more to see a significant increase in traffic. This will double the truck traffic!
⚠️MORE POTHOLES, NO FUNDING More stress on our already crumbling infrastructure with no funding to fix existing issues. The Rebuild Illinois capital bill will not fund future repairs, nor does it address the current issues we have.
⚠️NO TAX RELIEF FOR RESIDENTS! NorthPoint has historically only built projects when they get a TIF or other tax abatement. They aren’t profitable without it.
⚠️INCREASED TAX BURDEN! Residents will pay for infrastructure maintenance and repairs, sewer and water, additional police and fire personnel.
⚠️ LOW-WAGE TEMP JOBS! NorthPoint won’t guarantee pay, permanency or quality of jobs.
⚠️ POOR LOCATION! Nowhere near the Houbolt Bridge and no direct access to Centerpoint. This means higher transportation costs, which leads to shortcuts, lost trucks, and parking in unapproved areas. CenterPoint was supposed to be a contained closed loop — it doesn’t work!
⚠️ NOT ENOUGH WATER! The area’s aquifers running dry and this is a huge drain on supply.
⚠️HIGH VACANCY RATES - EMPTY WAREHOUSES! We need to diversify industry. We already have vacant warehouses and reports back it up. Why build it to sit empty?
⚠️ DANGEROUS POLLUTION AND HEALTH RISKS Added pollution from diesel particulate matter results in negative health impacts.
⚠️ TAXING BODIES OPPOSE NORTHPOINT - The following taxing bodies have already made resolutions OPPOSING this project: Elwood School District, Elwood Fire Protection District, Jackson Township, Manhattan School District, and Manhattan Township.
⚠️ ORGANIZATIONS OPPOSE NORTHPOINT - The Sierra Club, OpenLands, and Warehouse Workers for Justice, Rachel Ventura for Congress also oppose this project recognizing the problems it presents.
