Tell KET: Stop Platforming Hate

Kentucky Educational Television

Since last year, KET has hosted a number of segments on LGBT rights. Not one of these reports has featured a trans person, but several of them have included anti-trans activists, science deniers, and religious radicals.

Tell KET: our public television should represent all Kentuckians. It should not be a platform exclusively for the voices of hate. #NothingAboutUsWithoutUs

We call upon KET to immediately end its censorship of trans Kentuckians' voices.

KET's stated values include Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Integrity, and Learning. But on policy issues affecting transgender Kentuckians, KET has failed to live up to these values.

In the last year, KET has hosted a number of segments that featured anti-trans activists, science deniers, and religious radicals. These folks have been given a free platform to spread disinformation and bigotry. Giving lies and hate an opportunity to spread unchecked violates the public trust, harms Kentuckians, and advances the oppressive agenda of the powerful.

Even more heinous is that KET has not once featured a transgender Kentuckian in their programming. While trans Kentuckians are seeing policies that will harm them profoundly, their own public broadcaster does not even give them a chance to speak.

Kentucky has two trans-led statewide organizing groups and dozens of qualified, intelligent, excellent transgender activists. There is simply no excuse for allowing Kentuckians' lives to be debated without a word of response.

We call on KET to stop the spread of lies on your channel and immediately cease airing segments about transgender people's rights without including transgender people's voices. There is NO substitute for transgender people's own words. This censorship and slander of trans Kentuckians must immediately end.
