Add your name: Tell New Hampshire Gov. Sununu to repeal the death penalty

Gov. Sununu

New Hampshire is the only state in New England that still has the death penalty.

But by nearly a 2-1 margin, the Republican-controlled state legislature has voted to repeal the practice. Now the bill goes to Governor Chris Sununu, who has threatened to veto it.

Gov. Sununu claims that by vetoing the bill, he is standing with all law enforcement and murder victim family members. But this is not the case. As New Hampshire Rep. Renny Cushing—whose father was murdered in 1988—points out, the death penalty goes against New Hampshire values: "New Hampshire has never been in love with the death penalty," Cushing said. "New Hampshire values civil liberties, it values human rights. New Hampshire can live without the death penalty."

The death penalty is costly, unfair, and inaccurate. It is applied in an unjust manner, largely dependent on the accused's race, income, ability, and whether the victim is white.

New Hampshire spends millions of dollars to maintain this ineffective, inhumane, and regressive practice – money that could be better spent on services for families of victims and effective violence prevention measures.

Sign if you agree: Gov. Sununu should abolish the death penalty in New Hampshire once and for all.
