Tell Paulo Freire Social Justice Charter School to STOP UNION BUSTING NOW!

To Gil Traverso and the Board of Paulo Freire Social Justice Charter School

Ever since we unionized with UAW 2322 in March of 2020, you have engaged in a systematic pattern of abuses and anti-union actions, from disciplining and firing union leaders, to refusing to engage in good faith bargaining. You currently have multiple unfair labor practices filed against you.

Last Monday, after making all unionized staff members apply for their own jobs for next school year, you unceremoniously non-reappointed 15 of the 23 teachers who have held the school together for years and all through the pandemic.

Paulo Freire, our school’s namesake, was a radical resolutely on the side of the oppressed and against dictatorship in his native Brazil. He said: Leaders who do not act dialogically, but insist on imposing their decisions, do not organize the people--they manipulate them. They do not liberate, nor are they liberated: they oppress.

The students of PFSJCS deserve a safe, comprehensive, and fully supported learning environment, with appropriate classroom support, guidelines, and learning materials. These are the things that the teaching staff have consistently campaigned for, and these are the things you have repeatedly denied them. Teacher’s working conditions are student learning conditions!

We agree with Freire that: Unity and organization can enable the oppressed to change their weakness into a transforming force with which they can re-create the world and make it more human.

We, the following teachers, students, alumni, and community members, ask you to cease this pattern of union-busting and respect your teachers’ right to organize by reversing your decision to non-renew two-thirds of your current teacher's contracts and bargain a fair contract with PFSJU-UAW 2322.
