Tell state legislators to implement strong pretrial laws

New York State Legislators

On any given day, 16,000 legally innocent New Yorkers are being jailed across our state. That will change on January 1, 2020, when the new bail and discovery laws take effect in New York State. 43% fewer unconvicted people will be incarcerated in New York’s county jails and instead be home with their families.

Prosecutors and police have already begun a fear campaign, spreading false information about the new pretrial laws. For decades, they have used this same rhetoric to create the current crisis of mass incarceration and harm Black, Brown, and low-income communities.

It’s time to implement strong bail and discovery laws. State elected officials need to hear from you. Tell state legislators that you support the new pretrial laws that will keep thousands of legally innocent people out of jail and to implement them without any changes!

I'm writing in support of the new pretrial laws, taking effect on January 1, 2020. Please act to ensure strong implementation of the new bail and discovery laws -- without any changes -- that will keep thousands of legally innocent people out of jail.
