Tell States to Stop Requiring Facial Recognition for Unemployment Benefits

State Legislators

23 states have quietly started forcing people to use facial recognition before being able to access their unemployment benefits.

ID.me requires people to give personal biometric information in order to access benefits. This is wrong. No one should have to give up their privacy, risk their identity being stolen, or have to use racist technology to access funds that they need to survive. This is especially cruel during a pandemic, when millions of people have lost their jobs.

These new facial recognition systems are plagued with problems: benefits are being withheld because the technology doesn’t work, ID.me is susceptible to fraud (some people are even making 3D printed masks to beat the face recognition technology), and there are many delays.

This new system is unnecessary, it doesn’t work, and it’s wrong.

Sign the petition to tell state legislators to stop requiring facial recognition for unemployment benefits.

Petition:

To State Legislators,

I’m writing to demand you stop using ID.me as a part of the unemployment benefits process. This technology requires people to hand over their biometric information, which is an invasion of privacy, puts their information at risk of being hacked and stolen, and disproportionately harms people of color. This system is unjust and you should immediately stop using it.
