Tell the Biden Administration: Investigate Racial Inequity at Maximus

Jenny Yang, Director Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs (OFCCP), U.S. Department of Labor

Maximus call center workers are fighting for fair wages, affordable healthcare, respect, and a voice on the job. But the company has refused to address their concerns. Meanwhile, Black and Latina women make up nearly 50% of Maximus frontline workers, but only 5% of the company’s executive leadership. Despite their public commitment to diversity, Maximus has failed to address this issue of racial inequity at the company.

Maximus makes billions of dollars from contracts with the federal government. The Biden administration should immediately investigate employment practices at Maximus and take steps to ensure that all workers have fair opportunities for advancement. Add your name to the petition in support.

I am writing to call on the Biden administration to investigate Maximus, a major federal contractor, for its apparent failure to address systemic racial disparities within its workforce.

Black and Latina women make up nearly half (48%) of Maximus frontline workers, but make up only 5% of the company’s executive leadership. This is in stark contrast to federal agencies with large call center workforces like the IRS and Social Security Administration, where women and people of color are represented at similar percentages across levels.

Recently, Maximus paid its executives hundreds of thousands of dollars in bonuses for achieving diversity goals without creating an effective career advancement plan for the workers who earn their profits. Instead of having clear pathways for promotion, research by CWA, NAACP and SOC found that many frontline Maximus workers–primarily Black and Brown women–reported feeling trapped in dead-end jobs.

Federal contracts should provide workers with stable careers and well-compensated jobs. We call on you to investigate Maximus immediately and take steps to ensure that these stark racial inequities are corrected.
