As the world waits breathlessly as Brittney Griner is held captive in a Russian prison for a small amount of hash oil, we must demand President Biden take action to free her. However, as we reflect on this horrendous injustice abroad, we must recognize that this inequity occurs in our own country every day– where hundreds of people in America are arrested for cannabis daily.
To be clear, there is no place in this world where people should be imprisoned for possession of a plant like marijuana. For this reason, and many others, we must join hands in demanding the Biden administration take action to free Brittney Griner and set an example for upending prohibitionists’ policing.

We, the undersigned, call upon President Biden to assert American global geopolitical leadership for the immediate release of WMBA star player Brittney Griner from Russia, who is currently being detained for possession of less than half of a gram of vape concentrate.
In order to best position America’s leadership and negotiating position to save Brittney, President Biden should immediately take action domestically to bring US policy in line with his stated campaign promise of decriminalizing cannabis federally and pardoning federal marijuana convictions.
Both of these steps can be taken by executive action and will better position the global community to fall in line with America’s demand for the release of Griner.
