Tell the Justice Department: Free the Freedom Fighters!

U.S. Department of Justice

Every generation of freedom fighters in America – from protests of the Civil Rights Movement in the 60's, to uprisings in the aftermath of George Floyd’s death – has been met with police rioting, tear gas, physical abuse, and bogus arrests. Many of these freedom fighters have been serving as long as 50 years in prison.

None of them deserve to die in the system.

A generation of Black people fighting for liberation have been confined to the prison-industrial complex, and it has extended to our generation. A report by the Movement for Black Lives found that in more than 300 federal cases targeting of Black activists during protests last year, federal penalties were harsher in 88% of the cases.

Black August honors the culture’s most resilient freedom fighters and works to eliminate the power of the state to inflict harm on our communities. This Black August, we are calling on the Department of Justice to bring justice to frontline freedom fighters and release all political prisoners.
