Tell the Lake Forest City Council: We Want Clean Energy Choice

Community Choice Energy would bring competition, clean electricity and local sustainability programs to Lake Forest

January 28, 2021 — The Lake Forest City Council is considering cancelling its participation in a new local energy program that would give residents and businesses a choice in electricity providers, clean energy and savings on electric bills.

The program, called Community Choice Energy (CCE), would give Lake Forest families and businesses an alternative to monopoly SoCal Edison for their electricity needs. SCE is planning a 14% rate increase for residential customers in 2021.

A study by the City of Irvine found that CCE will enable that city to achieve 100% clean energy by 2035 - ten years ahead of state goals - at no additional cost to customers, reducing greenhouse emissions by 360,000 metric tons per year, which is roughly equivalent to taking 78,000 cars off the road. Benefits will be similar for other cities that participate.

CCE programs already serve over 10 million California residents, delivering cleaner power at rates typically equal to or lower than traditional power companies.

Thousands of Lake Forest residents were forced to evacuate to escape wildfires in 2020, and are worried at the prospect of increasingly dangerous fire seasons brought by climate change. CCE can provide energy security with incentives for microgrids and virtual power plants while reducing the emissions that drive climate change.

Under CCE rules, the city has until April 1 to withdraw from the program. Based on the council’s discussion at their January meeting, several council members seem inclined to vote to leave the program. A vote is expected at the March 2nd meeting.

Please add your name to this petition to tell the Lake Forest City Council to stay with CCE.

We deserve a choice.

Dear Lake Forest City Council,
Please vote to stay in OC's Community Choice Energy (CCE) program. CCE will give Lake Forest families and businesses a much-needed alternative to monopoly SoCal Edison for our electricity needs and put our city on the path to 100% clean energy.

A study by the City of Irvine found that CCE will enable Irvine to achieve 100% clean energy by 2035 - ten years ahead of state goals - at no additional cost to customers, reducing greenhouse emissions by 360,000 metric tons per year, which is roughly equivalent to taking 78,000 cars off the road. Benefits will be similar for other cities that participate.

Thousands of Lake Forest residents were forced to evacuate to escape wildfires in 2020, and are worried at the prospect of increasingly dangerous fire seasons and climate change. CCE can provide energy security with incentives for microgrids and virtual power plants while reducing the emissions that drive climate change.

There is little room left for fossil-fuel powered energy when levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere are higher than at any point during the past 800,000 years. If emissions aren’t dramatically reduced soon, scientists say, climate-influenced catastrophes could kill millions of people and devastate the global economy.

CCE programs already serve over 10 million California residents, delivering cleaner power at rates typically equal to or lower than traditional power companies.

Please act in Lake Forest's best interest by staying with CCE. We deserve a choice.
