Tell the Port: Lose the Lease!

Port of Seattle

The last time Shell explored for oil in the Arctic Ocean (2012), the operation was a fiasco that ended in 8 felony convictions and a drill rig run aground.

This year, Shell signed a contract with the Port of Seattle to dock their rigs for maintenance before returning to the Arctic this summer, sparking immediate backlash from people all over the country who object to Shell using Seattle as a homebase for this reckless and disastrous project. Other98 is on the ground organizing with local Seattle groups, and we just had our first victory: the Mayor of Seattle joined our fight by declaring that Shell does not have the correct permits to use the port.

This is a huge win. Now we have a unique chance to delay Shell’s plans, potentially locking them out of the Arctic for another year. Let’s not waste it.

Many leading scientists agree that we already have too much oil in known reserves and that new Arctic oil MUST be left in the ground in order to avoid catastrophic climate change.

If Seattle’s Port Commission cancels Shell’s permit, it could cause massive delays for Shell that would make it impossible for them to drill in the Arctic this year.

Help us protect the Climate and the Arctic for future generations. Take action now: tell Seattle’s Port Commission to take a stand and keep Shell OUT of Seattle’s port.

By allowing Shell to make Seattle a homeport, the Port of Seattle is contributing to the disastrous consequences of Arctic drilling. Please heed the people’s objections and rescind Shell’s lease immediately.
