Tell the Senate: No vacation while democracy is in crisis

U.S. Senate

While our democracy crumbles at the hands of GOP politicians who’d rather silence voters and rig our democracy than risk losing an election -- the Senate is gearing up for its summer vacation.

That’s right: we elected these men and women to serve our country and represent our interests. But instead of working to advance pro-voter legislation that has already passed the House -- the Senate is going to recess for several weeks in August.

That’s unacceptable. Our democracy is facing a coordinated attack -- as Republicans in states like Georgia, Florida, and Texas push laws designed to make it harder for voters, especially Black and Brown voters, to cast their ballot.

Meanwhile, redistricting processes are ramping up across the country -- and some politicians are planning to draw wildly unfair and partisan electoral maps, denying voters a meaningful say.

The For the People Act could fix all of that. It includes proven, comprehensive provisions that would protect the freedom to vote, end partisan gerrymandering, limit Big Money’s stranglehold on our democracy, hold elected officials to a higher ethical standard, and so much more.

But Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell -- one of the entrenched politicians who thrives under the status quo -- and his GOP Senate allies filibustered the bill this summer, once again putting partisan politics before the future of our democracy.

In regards to the For the People Act, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer has said “failure is not an option.” [1] He’s right -- and this bill can’t wait another day, let alone the rest of the summer. If you agree, add your name today.

Our democracy is hanging by a thread -- voters are being denied their rights, Big Money is running rampant, and politicians are getting ready to gerrymander their states. But despite these pressing threats, the Senate is about to leave town for a month without sending President Biden any legislation to address them.

We demand that the Senate delay its August recess until our elected officials can push through the partisan gridlock to pass the For the People Act -- a historic bill that would ensure our democracy works for all of us.
