4-H Should Be Welcoming of ALL Children

Sonny Perdue, Secretary of Agriculture

In small towns and rural communities, we believe in taking care of ALL our kids. Period!

But recently Trump administration officials pushed 4-H, a national youth program popular in rural America, to withdraw policies welcoming LGBTQ children after protests from the Liberty Counsel, an organization labeled a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center.

4-H is one of the most important programs for rural youth. It helps almost six million young people develop citizenship, leadership, responsibility and life skills and is administered through the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).

Rural children deserve equal access to the valuable skills gained through 4-H and all kids should have the opportunity to benefit from 4-H programs regardless of their sexual orientation and gender identification.

Our campaign is at a critical tipping point. In the last few days, more than 70 members of Congress signed a letter calling the Trump Administration’s action "inappropriate USDA overreach into 4-H inclusivity efforts" and said it is "detrimental to current and future LGBTQ participants."

The Human Rights Campaign recently released a statement saying that, “This latest action by the Trump-Pence Administration is an unnecessary and cruel attack on LGBTQ youth that seeks to destroy community rather than create it.

Now that Democrats control the House we can hold members of the Administration accountable. That’s why it’s so important we demand that the Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue reinstate 4-H’s guidances welcoming LGBTQ children.

In small towns and rural communities, we take care of ALL our kids. That’s why 4-H programs must be open and affirming to all vulnerable populations, including LGBTQ youth. Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue must reinstate 4-H’s guidances welcoming LGBTQ children.
