No Facial Recognition in School!

Sign this petition urging the Department of Education to keep this deeply flawed and creepy technology out of our schools.

Companies are aggressively working to introduce facial recognition in our children’s classrooms, and schools across America are buying in! This is a huge problem because studies clearly show that facial recognition is biased and frequently misidentifies people with darker skin. So when it is used at schools for things like attendance or tracking crime, Black and brown kids can end up getting accused or even arrested for something they had nothing to do with -- just because of a computer mistake. Experts say this type of invasive surveillance doesn’t improve school safety, subjects kids to discrimination, erodes privacy, and should be banned from classrooms.

“A critical part of the Department of Education’s mission is ensuring equal access to education for all students. Facial recognition technology undermines that mission. Multiple studies have shown significant bias in this technology, especially in the misidentification of darker-skinned people. Implementing this technology in schools will unfairly target and penalize students based on the color of their skin.

Please support equal access to education by issuing guidance to - schools not to implement facial recognition technology and similar student surveillance technologies.”
