In light of the American Legislative Exchange Council’s (ALEC) radical anti-worker and undemocratic practices, over 100 major companies have withdrawn their participation in the organization. UPS continues to fund ALEC and their controversial practices, however, undermining their corporate responsibility and should stop immediately.

ALEC brings politicians and corporate lobbyists behind closed doors at luxury resorts to secretly vote on bills that harm working people, our environment, and the democratic process. Through ALEC, corporate lobbyists get an equal vote with legislators on bills that defund public services, obstruct efforts to address climate change, and weaken workers’ rights, with specific bills that support worker misclassification.

What’s worse is that corporations are able to take huge tax write-offs for funding of ALEC, which is currently classified as a charity by the IRS in spite of its patent lobbying activities. ALEC is bad for UPS’s reputation, and worse for the public at large.

We, the undersigned, urge UPS to withdraw its membership in ALEC. It’s time to move forward by leaving ALEC behind.
