Tell Utility Regulators:
We need to plan for the future

Chair Hoover and members of the Maryland Public Service Commission cc: Gov. Wes Moore

The Moore Administration and the state legislature have committed to reducing climate pollution 60% by 2031, and being carbon-neutral emissions by 2045, as directed by the Climate Solutions Now Act of 2022. To achieve these goals, we need to upgrade our homes with clean, efficient heating and electricity.

Maryland utility regulators are opening up a proceeding to plan for the future of our gas system, which can smooth the transition and help Maryland residents access lower energy bills, cleaner air, and more comfortable homes.

Please move quickly to create a managed plan for our gas system to ensure gas utilities provide affordable service, maintain safety, achieve state climate goals, and don't force customers to pay for a system they no longer use.

Instead of focusing on maintaining the safety and affordability of our gas system, Maryland gas utilities are spending billions on new pipes and equipment, many of which may soon become obsolete, driving up rates and monthly bills.

As Maryland's utility regulators, we need your leadership to ensure spending is prudent and that we have a smart plan for the future. While this transition won’t happen overnight, gas usage will decline in decades to come as homes get more efficient and upgrade gas appliances with efficient electric heating. We are counting on you to be thoughtful about how to strategically manage the transition, looking at both urgent changes that need to be made to public policy and engaging in long term planning so we can protect consumers, health, and the planet.

With your help, Maryland residents can access lower energy bills, cleaner air, and better comfort -- all while reducing pollution from our buildings.

Thank you,
