Thank Sierra Club Workers Standing for Palestinian Freedom

Progressive Workers Union

Sierra Club workers of the Progressive Workers Union (PWU), representing hundreds of environmental justice workers, have passed a historic resolution pledging solidarity with Palestinians and their struggle for freedom from Israel’s oppressive apartheid rule.

This resolution is a victory for human rights and climate justice everywhere, representing the principled stance of hundreds of environmental workers standing side by side in the struggle for justice for Palestinians as an integral part of our mission to ensure a just and livable planet for all. In addition to ensuring union funds aren’t invested in Israel’s system of apartheid and oppression of Palestinians, the resolution calls for establishing a Palestine Solidarity Committee, educating members on the ties between Palestine and Indigenous struggles in the US.

In May 2021, a dedicated group within the Sierra Club union formed the Palestine Solidarity Group in response to the news that Sierra Club’s leadership would continue leading “nature” trips to apartheid Israel, despite being asked by Palestinians to respect their struggle for justice and cancel the trips. These trips were widely condemned within the Sierra Club union and the environmental justice movement broadly, and today, workers are speaking out loud and clear: Palestinians deserve freedom and they shouldn’t have to wait another day for it.

Now we must show solidarity with these workers in return. We know from experience that the backlash to this resolution will be fierce and loud.

We need you to prove that there is also a fierce and loud (and growing) mass movement of people that support Palestinian freedom.

Add your name and show your support for the Sierra Club workers and their courageous public commitment to Palestinian freedom.

Dear Sierra Club Workers of the Progressive Workers Union,

I am writing to express my deep appreciation for the Sierra Club union members who voted in solidarity with Palestinian freedom and to thank you for your work over the past two years to achieve this incredible labor victory. Congratulations for taking this bold and principled stance in support of justice and liberation for the Palestinian people, especially during a time of mass layoffs at Sierra Club.

You have demonstrated the power of the labor movement in fighting for justice in Palestine and around the globe.

Together, we will continue fighting to protect our planet and build a movement grounded in earth justice.
