Thank You Mr Mueller-Elmau For Raising the Israeli Flag In Strong Support Of Israel And The Hostages

Dietmar Muller-Elmau

Mr Mueller-Elmau, the owner of Shloss Elmau, one of Germany's most prestigious luxury resorts, has stood in solidarity with Israel since the beginning of the war by bravely raising the Israeli flag at his hotel's entrance and vowing not to take it down until all the hostages have returned home. Despite the backlash, Mr Mueller-Elmau has remained steadfast in his decision to display the Israeli flag and we want to take a moment to thank him for his unwavering support.

Subject: The Israeli flag is a symbol of your commitment to the Jewish people

Dear Mr. Mueller-Elmau,

As world citizens, we appreciate your steadfast support for the State of Israel and Jewish people worldwide. By displaying the Israeli flag at the entrance of your hotel, you have put yourself on the right side of history.

Demonstrating moral clarity, you have been outspoken about the brutal massacre on October 7, calling it the genocidal attack that it was. Your expression of deep connection with the Jewish people caused you to travel to Israel the following January.

Your luxury 5-star hotel and spa in the Bavarian Alps is world-renowned. It has been a getaway for prime ministers and presidents, even hosting several G7 meetings. Your reputation is one of a free thinker who encourages lively discourse. Schloss-Elmau is a one-of-a-kind hospitality experience where all people are welcome to enjoy concerts, the great outdoors, and exceptional culinary fare. While your demonstration of solidarity for Israel might have resulted in a loss of business, instead, your hotel experienced a surge in bookings.

We commend your commitment to keeping the flag up until the last hostage comes home [1]. Despite facing negative responses, you held firm to your moral integrity, saying, “If you don’t take a position, you take a position, and I am on the side of liberty.” [2] Notwithstanding concerns voiced by your staff and the loss of some guests because of the Israeli flag at the entrance of the hotel, you remained steadfast in your commitment that it was the right thing to do.

Historically, your family has also had the chutzpah to stand in solidarity with the Jewish community. In the early 1930s, your grandfather Johannes Mueller had a close relationship with his Jewish supporters and friends, causing him to reject the Nazi party’s antisemitic tenets [3]. To your credit, you began collaborating with scholars from Hebrew University, the van Leer Institute in Jerusalem, and the chair of Jewish History and Culture in Munich since 1998 [4].

We wish there were more people like you. So many people have remained silent or indifferent to the brutal massacre on October 7th and the taking of hostages. In contrast, you are a beacon of hope from Bavaria.

Sincerely,
