Dear Trader Joe’s,

We are writing to ask you to stop carrying Turkish products until the Turkish government stops committing war crimes and crimes against humanity against the Kurdish people and others in the North and East region of Syria known as Rojava.

On October 9, 2019 Turkey's military invaded Rojava at the order of Recep Tayyip Erdogan and the blessing of Donald Trump to carry out ethnic cleansing against our Kurdish allies and others in the region. The regime continues to target unarmed civilians, including children, with air strikes and chemical weapons, and also has been directly funding ISIS’s attacks on civilians in Rojava. The number of displaced inhabitants is estimated at about 300,000.

With the Covid-19 pandemic spreading across the world, it is hitting the war-torn region of Rojava particularly hard. Any society under these harsh political, economic, and environmental conditions would have a particularly difficult time managing a pandemic, and this has been exacerbated by the ongoing attempts at full on genocide by the Turkish state. This has included blocking access to downstream water that is necessary for hygiene and preventing the spread of disease and ongoing airial bombing and murder of civilians.

Economic engagement with Turkey enables these atrocities. By continuing to purchase Turkish goods, we see that Trader Joe’s is unintentionally complicit with Turkish war crimes and crimes against humanity. We would greatly appreciate the opportunity to discuss this matter together so that we can get on the same page with how Turkey is funding its ongoing war against the Kurdish people.

In our research, we have noted a number of products with the Trader Joe’s brand that contain Turkish ingredients; we are attaching a list of these products to this letter. We ask that you pull these products or switch to more ethically sourced suppliers from other countries. We believe Trader Joe’s to be conscientious and we are looking to your company to do the right thing.
We demand a response by May 1st acknowledging that you have received this message and outlining the next steps that you will take to ensure that your products are more ethically sourced and not supporting the ethnic cleansing of the Kurdish people and other ethnicities in Rojava. We are available to meet with you and are happy to answer any questions that you may have.

Sincerely,

Rojava Supporters Worldwide
