Trump tells supporters to break voting laws -- DOJ must condemn

U.S. Department of Justice

Donald Trump is going to absurd new lengths to try to undermine the integrity of our elections.

“One person, one vote” is a fundamental principle of our democracy -- and Trump is clearly trying to undermine the public’s faith in that idea. States have laws and processes in place to ensure every eligible voter can only cast one ballot that will count.

What President Trump is suggesting his supporters do is not only nonsense -- it’s also a felony.

But if the last several years have taught us anything, it's that some Trump followers will do just about anything he recommends -- like taking the unproven, unapproved, and potentially dangerous medications he has recommended for COVID-19.

Trump's comments also reveal yet another racist double standard in our justice system. While Trump tells a largely white crowd of supporters to deliberately break voting laws, Crystal Mason -- a Black voter in Texas -- is serving a five-year sentence for voting without knowing she was ineligible to do so. And Terri Lynn Rote, a white woman from Iowa, received just two years' probation and a fine for attempting to vote twice for Trump in the 2016 election.

Trump’s remarks are harmful, illegal, and illogical -- and the Department of Justice has an obligation to say as much. Those government officials charged with defending our democracy cannot let Trump’s ramblings jeopardize it.

Right now, add your name to condemn Trump’s comments -- and urge the DOJ to do the same.

Donald Trump urged his supporters in North Carolina to commit a felony by voting for him twice. And even just giving this order might be a felony, since it incites the commission of a crime.

This attack on the integrity of our elections can’t go ignored. The Department of Justice needs to make it absolutely clear to the public that what the president is asking his supporters to do is illegal and punishable by jail time.
