Twitter: Make it easy to report child sexual abuse!

Jack Dorsey, CEO, Twitter

Images and videos of child sexual abuse are rife on Twitter, but the platform makes it extremely difficult to report them. It’s easier to flag spam to Twitter than this appalling crime!

Children have described harrowing experiences trying to track down and report images of their own abuse, and to get the platform to take them down. In one case, two minors are suing Twitter for allegedly refusing to remove videos depicting them in a sex act when they were just 13. The tweets were viewed over 167,000 times before law enforcement intervened.

These failures are putting kids at risk and retraumatizing trafficking survivors. They must end now. Twitter should urgently update its systems to make it possible to report child sexual abuse material with a couple of clicks. And it must guarantee that all child sexual abuse material that does get reported is immediately taken down.

Mr Dorsey,

Twitter is failing children. By making it difficult to report child sexual abuse material (CSAM) you are putting kids at risk, retraumatizing trafficking survivors and hiding the full scale of the problem on your platform.

We urge you to immediately put in place tools and processes that allow people to get swift action against CSAM on your platform. This means:

Allowing people to report CSAM directly from tweets and account profiles, as is already possible for spam, targeted harassment and other kinds of content.
Allowing people to do this without logging into Twitter or leaving an email address.
Guaranteeing that all CSAM reported is immediately taken down.

It is time to step up and do your bit to truly protect children. Please act now.
