We, the undersigned members, allies, and supporters of OPEIU Local 40 and the surrounding Rochester community, are writing to emphasize a critical juncture in negotiations with OPEIU Local 40 Nurses. It’s essential to be clear: Two years is too long to go without a contract for our medical professionals. Our demands are reasonable and necessary for the well-being of everyone we serve.
After successfully bringing back over 100 nurses through our united efforts, we recognize now more than ever that our collective voice reflects the commitment of this facility to the community. Our remarkable solidarity during this time demonstrates our dedication not just to ourselves but to the highest quality of patient care for our friends, family members, and neighbors.
This situation goes beyond mere negotiations; it’s about doing what is right. We have shown resilience and determination amid a critical nursing shortage. However, the time for action is now. We demand immediate attention and a fair contract that acknowledges our contributions and guarantees safe working conditions.
We are asking for what we deserve:
1. Safe Staffing Ratios: Establish and enforce safe nurse-to-patient ratios. The safety and well-being of our patients depend on adequate staffing levels.
2. Fair Wages: We seek fair compensation that reflects our vital roles in the Henry Ford Health System and aligns with the rising cost of living. This includes competitive incentives at industry-standard rates such as critical, call and voluntary reassignment pay provisions to retain our dedicated nursing staff.
3. Respect and Recognition: Acknowledge the invaluable work performed by medical professionals in the Rochester community and restore a culture of trust and collaboration.
4. End Union Busting and Protect Our Rights: We demand an immediate cessation of any actions aimed at undermining our union and existing protections that we have fought hard to secure. The use of non-bargaining unit positions to dilute our bargaining power and erode hard-won rights as well as direct dealing, will not be tolerated.
It’s time to put an end to the delays and start addressing our legitimate concerns. Our commitment to patient care is unwavering, but management must partner with us to foster a supportive and healthy work environment.
We urge you to take our demands seriously and act now.
In Solidarity,
