A Wrecking Ball to Democracy is Headed for the Texas Democratic Party likely in an October Special SDEC Meeting

Originally on September 18th, the State Democratic Executive Committee (SDEC) were slated to vote on the Steering Committee proposal but it was postponed to October. This will change the Texas Democratic Party Rules in the following ways:


  1. The SDEC will lose power by being reduced from 95 to 13 members in between quarterly meetings which is 14% of the SDEC.

  2. The Steering Committee will use their concentration of power to influence and advise the State Chairman, party officers, and senior staff on a monthly basis on the following:

    1. Strategic Plan Priorities for the Texas Democratic Party (TDP)

    2. Critical issues that arise

    3. Compensation of the Executive Directors

    4. Budget & Finance

    5. Day to day operations

    6. Personnel matters

    7. There are no term limits for Steering Committee members.

    8. There is no clear way to remove Steering Committee members.


Why does this matter?

  • Our democracy is at stake for all Texans
  • We want to protect EVERY Democrat's right to democracy and fair representation in the party
  • Almost all Texas Democrats will lose their representation and seats at the table.
  • The needs and issues of Texans are not one size fits all.
  • Our representatives must have a track record of intersectional advocacy for regions, issues, constituencies, etc.
  • Being a part of a community alone without actively advocating for inclusion of all Texans in Texas Democratic Party programs, budgets, reports, and strategic priorities does nothing to further our ability to participate in the party.
  • Decisions that affect us will be made without our input by people who think they know us better than we know ourselves - Nothing about us without us!

What can you do?

Contact your SDEC Committee Members to Stop the Steering Committee Proposal at an October Special Meeting! If you believe that inclusion and representation are essential, and you understand why accessibility must be considered in planning from the start, contact your SDEC Committee Representative and urge them to vote no and stop the steering committee proposal.
