UBER’S FACIAL IDENTIFICATION OF DRIVERS IS WRONG

Uber and Uber Eats

Uber Eats drivers in the UK are calling out the company for its use of racist and faulty facial recognition technology.

Drivers are forced to upload a photo to confirm their identity, but the “facial identification” tech used by Uber fails to recognize some drivers, and automatically fires them. Uber says this system is meant to stop fraud and drivers subcontracting their work—an erroneous claim, as drivers point out they’re working 60 hours a week and barely making ends meet. Uber’s broken facial recognition system disproportionately harms workers from Black, Asian, and other minority ethnic backgrounds.

This isn’t the first time Uber has been called out for its use of facial recognition technology: in 2018 a Black driver in the US sued Uber for firing him after facial identification failed to recognize him.

This technology is based on deeply flawed algorithms, but even if it worked perfectly this sort of worker surveillance is deeply problematic. No one should be forced to submit sensitive biometric information in order to keep their job.

Tell Uber and Uber Eats: stop using facial identification on drivers!
