UNC Workers Living Wage Petition

UNC Chapel Hill Administration and Board of Trustees

We, the workers of UNC Chapel Hill, call for immediate action by the Board of Trustees to address the following demands:

1. Pay UNC Workers a Living Wage: All workers on campus, including graduate workers, must receive a wage that aligns with the cost of living in Orange County. According to the MIT Living Wage Calculator, for a single adult with no dependents, this amounts to $24.56 per hour, or approximately $4,000 per month. We demand that campus workers' wages be raised to a minimum of $25 per hour, and graduate workers receive a minimum stipend of $40,000 for a 9-month academic year.

2. Regular Dialogue and Transparency: We insist on periodic "meet and confer" sessions between UNC-Chapel Hill administrators and representatives of UNC workers, through UE Local 150, the North Carolina Public Workers Union, in accordance with Governor Cooper’s Executive Order No. 5. These meetings should address progress on the implementation of these demands and foster an ongoing dialogue aimed at improving conditions for all workers.

These actions are necessary to ensure that UNC Chapel Hill remains a leading institution that respects the dignity of its workers and provides an equitable environment for all. A living wage is not optional – it is fundamental to maintaining a high standard of work, academic excellence, UNC’s relative standing among peer institutions, and the well-being of the community.

I stand in solidarity with the demands of workers at UNC Chapel Hill, calling for a minimum living wage of $40,000 for all university employees and regular meetings between union representatives and UNC Chapel Hill administration.

Fulfilling these demands would be a good first step towards making sure that the workers can continue to fulfill the university’s mission to generate and share knowledge for the betterment of our communities.
