Urge AG Garland: Stop Seeking Death Sentences!

US Attorney General Merrick Garland

Join Senators Durbin, Booker, Leahy & Reps Pressley, Espaillat and others calling on Attorney General Merrick Garland to Act to Stop Federal Death Penalty Prosecutions.

[SCROLL DOWN TO SEE THE ACTUAL LANGUAGE OF THE PETITION.]

The Biden Administration has promised to abolish the federal death penalty, and legislation to do so is pending in Congress. Recently, federal prosecutors withdrew noticing seeking death sentences in at least seven pending prosecutions. That's great, but it is not enough. Thank Attorney General Merrick Garland for the withdraw of death notices in the seven cases known so far, and urge him to:

  • Declare that the death penalty will not be sought in any federal prosecutions, even in recent cases of domestic terrorism by mass shooters motivated by hate;
  • Order the withdraw of all remaining "death notices;"
  • Support efforts in Congress to pass the Federal Death Penalty Prohibition Act.

On August 9, 2021, seventeen United States Senators and multiple Representatives wrote to Attorney General Merrick Garland with the above asks. Click here to see the full letter from the Senate here and here for  the letter from the House. Please sign this petition to join them in urging the Attorney General to act to stop capital prosecutions and support an end to the federal death penalty.

Thank you.
