Adopt a “Climate Peace Clause” in Upcoming Trade Talks

U.S. Trade Representative

Climate Peace Clause
Officials from the United States and European Union are meeting soon for trade negotiations that could have a major impact on the future of climate policy at home and around the world.  Similar negotiations are also underway with countries in Asia, the Americas and Africa.

Please join us in urging the U.S. Trade Representative to adopt a “Climate Peace Clause” that ends trade attacks on green jobs initiatives and other climate policies.  We’ll be delivering thousands of comments from people like you while there is still time to make a difference.

Please prioritize the inclusion of a “Climate Peace Clause” in the U.S.-EU Trade and Technology Council (TTC), and all other trade negotiations, including the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework (IPEF), the Americas Partnership for Economic Prosperity (APEP) and the U.S.-Kenya Strategic Trade & Investment Partnership (Kenya STIP).

Outdated trade agreements are increasingly being used to attack green jobs initiatives and other climate policies in the United States and across the globe. These trade challenges are an obstacle to ambitious climate policy and a livable future. You can help prevent these costly and time-consuming attacks on climate progress by proposing and adopting a Climate Peace Clause under which all parties agree not to use the dispute resolution mechanisms of trade and investment pacts to challenge other countries’ climate policies.

The TTC, IPEF, APEP, Kenya STIP and other trade proposals are only worth advancing if they benefit working people and the planet. Inclusion of a Climate Peace Clause is one of the most impactful steps you can take right now towards that goal. I urge you to put forward a Climate Peace Clause and work with other governments — starting with the EU in the TTC negotiations — to make that Peace Clause a reality.
