We, voters of San Francisco, SFUSD families, educators, and supporters, call on the San Francisco Board of Education to delay the superintendent search process by one month, or until the recall election can be certified.

The current deadline is February 18, 2022; these leaders and organizations are calling for a delay:

Leaders: Mayor London Breed; State Senator Scott Wiener; Assemblymember Phil Ting; Board of Supervisors Matt Haney, Gordon Mar, Aaron Peskin, Catherine Stefani; Former School Board Presidents Matt Haney, Norman Yee, Rachel Norton, Fred Rodriguez. [Additional leaders will be added as they sign on].

Organizations: SF Parent Action, Families for San Francisco, Chinese/API Voter Outreach Task Force, Alice B. Toklas LGBTQ Democratic Club, GrowSF, United Democratic Club. [Additional organizations will be added as they sign on].

The incoming Superintendent will face a challenging climate and, now, a new Board of Education. In order to ensure that the best candidate is at the helm of SF Unified School District, the hiring committee needs to have a robust, diverse, and high-quality pool to draw from. Given the recall election, applicants do not yet know who they will be working with or reporting to. It could take weeks for the election to be certified. We must allow SFUSD access to the widest range of possible candidates; there’s too much uncertainty at this moment.

Delaying the application deadline to March 15, 2022 would enable SFUSD to attract a broader range of applicants who might otherwise be deterred by the timing of the recall election; while still allowing ample time for the chosen candidate to start on July 1st, 2022. With more clarity after the recall election is behind us, the new Superintendent can plan long-term with full buy-in from the Board of Education.

Nosotros, los votantes de San Francisco, familias, educadores y simpatizantes del SFUSD, hacemos un llamado a la Junta de Educación de San Francisco para que retrase el proceso de búsqueda del superintendente por un mes, o hasta que se pueda certificar la elección de destitución.
