Want money for your retirement system? Support the Legacy Fund!

The Texas House of Representatives

Dear friends,

Do you want free money for your retirement system?

I promise this isn't a trick question. The Texas House of Representatives is considering a bill that would do just that––and the Texas Pension Coalition needs your help letting the entire House know this is a financially responsible way to protect pensions!

The Texas Pension Coalition is constantly on the lookout during the legislative season for bills that can impact your retirement. This not only includes legislation that can wreck public pensions, but also fiscally prudent measures that will allow you to retire with dignity and security.

On Wednesday morning, the House Appropriations Subcommittee considered this kind of well-crafted legislation: House Bill 20. HB 20 would create the Legacy Fund––a way to turn money that is currently doing nothing into money that will improve your retirement.

Here's how the Legacy Fund would work:

There's a ton of money in our state's Rainy Day Fund, billions more than is actually needed to take care of a shortfall in the budget. Rather than let this extra money just sit around and barely collect interest, HB 20 would create a separate endowment where it could be invested more thoughtfully. The money made from Legacy Fund investments could then be used to fund long-term projects such as our state's public pension systems.

This type of funding structure would catch the Teachers Retirement System and Employees Retirement System up to levels where they should be. Consistent funding not only makes financial monitors happy––it also makes it easier for cost of living adjustments to occur.

In short: Our retirement systems would get the money they need, and you would get the retirement security you deserve.

We think your retirement security shouldn't have to be up for debate every two years. The Legacy Fund would take care of a lot of the political debate that occurs every legislative session.

Think the Legacy Fund is a good idea?

We want House members to know that active and retired public employees throughout Texas think HB 20 is responsible legislation. Sign the petition below!

Dear Representative,

I am asking you to support House Bill 20. The Legacy Fund is a financially responsible way to ensure that public pensions receive the funding they need to remain strong. This bill will allow retired public employees to have pensions that allow them to live with dignity and security for years to come.

Thank you in advance for your support.
