Warwick and Leamington: Refugees Welcome Here

Warwick District Council

Earlier this week, Priti Patel announced a resettlement scheme for Afghan refugees fleeing terror and conflict in Afghanistan. This scheme states that the government would work with partners and other countries to settle 20, 000 refugees in Britain, and only 5, 000 are to be settled this year. As residents of Warwickshire we find this deeply concerning as this figure would amount to only eight refugees per constituency.

In Andrew Day's most recent Warwick District Council newsletter, he made this statement regarding Warwick District Council's pitiful attempt at lending support to families who are in need on humanitarian support:

Local Afghanistan emergency response is being led by our Housing Services team who have been working closely with government to assist with the resettlement programme. We’re delighted to be offering three refugee families a home and a very warm welcome to our community.

We call on all Warwick District Councillors who are responsible for housing to do better. We have a humanitarian responsibility to these families, and eight people per year is not enough. And to be proud of offering only three families refuge in our constituency is appalling. We can do better, and we must do better.
