We Need Your Help for Police Reform

We support the Mayor’s ordinance – Safer San Francisco – to let officers do their jobs and keep people safe

Nearly 70% of San Franciscans say property crime is rising, but the police don’t have the tools to tackle this growing problem. Why? Because the Police Commission drowns them in red tape and burdensome rules that prevent them from doing their jobs.

Mayor London Breed has proposed a ballot measure to increase efficiency, reduce paperwork and red tape, and allow SFPD to use new technology to fight crime. But it can’t pass without your support.

The ordinance will accomplish four things:

1. Allow the police department to adopt technology to stop crime.

San Francisco is the tech capital of the world, but our police department isn’t allowed to use basic technology to solve crimes. This ordinance will allow the police department to install safety cameras on public property, use drones to help track auto break-ins, and pilot other new technology without waiting months or longer for committee approval.

2. Reduce reporting requirements so police officers are on the streets fighting crime, not behind their desks filling out paperwork.

The Police Commission has added a ton of paperwork for police officers in recent years. This ordinance will allow officers to file minor incidents in the field, and only require paperwork for major incidents. It also reduces duplicate work - if multiple officers are involved in an incident, now only one needs to file paperwork, letting the others stay on the streets and keep us safe.

3. Permit police officers to pursue suspects driving away from crime scenes.

Even if police witness a crime being committed, current policy set by the Police Commission doesn’t allow them to pursue the criminal. This is wild! This ordinance will require officers to pursue a suspect for a felony or violent misdemeanor unless it poses a safety risk for bystanders.

4. Overhaul Police Commission processes to focus on outcomes, not ideology.

The Police Commission has consistently worked to push their ideologies down on San Franciscans –rather than focus on outcomes and keep us safe. No more. The new ordinance will create a public process for setting new policies by the commission, require an analysis of staff time for implementing new policies, and establish a 20% maximum limit on officer time spent on administrative duties.

We Need Your Help! If you want a safe city, with more officers walking their beats and spending less time behind their desks, basic technology so that officers can do their jobs better, and more focus on outcomes and solving crimes, then join us.

Dear Board of Supervisors,

We support Safer San Francisco, and believe you should too. Nearly 70% of San Franciscans say property crime is rising, but the police don’t have the tools to tackle this growing problem. The ordinance the Mayor has proposed has four objectives:
1. Allow the police department to adopt technology to stop crime.
2. Reduce reporting requirements so police officers are on the streets fighting crime, not behind their desks filling out paperwork.
3. Permit police officers to pursue suspects driving away from crime scenes.
4. Overhaul Police Commission processes to focus on outcomes, not ideology.

We all want to live in a city where we feel safe. And that means more officers walking their beats and spending less time behind their desks, basic technology so that officers can do their jobs better, and more focus on outcomes and solving crimes. We hope that you will support Safer San Francisco.

Thank you,
