We Oppose Kawainui Housing Apartments

The community of Kailua agrees that housing that is affordable is a necessity.
We do not agree that the Ahe Group affordable apartment project called Kawainui Housing Apartments, is appropriate on R-5 residential single-family zoning.
1. This project is proposed under 201H-38 (City and State), which exempts affordable housing projects from all state laws, county laws, the Honolulu City Charter, construction standards, and planning and zoning.
2. From Kawainui Street to the Kaneohe end of Kailua the zoning is residential. We are concerned that if this project is permitted it will set a precedent of allowing apartments in residential zoning. **see map
