Say YES to clean, renewable offshore wind!

• Green Oceans, a disinformation group founded by Little Compton property owners, is suing to reverse the approval of the Revolution Wind project. This project holds the promise of providing pollution-free power to more than 350,000 homes in Rhode Island and Connecticut.
|
• The Preservation Society of Newport, owner of 11 mansions, is suing to block both Revolution Wind and the South Fork Wind project, which could power an additional 70,000 homes. They claim, preposterously, that the distant view of offshore wind turbines will cost Newport $5 billion in lost tourism revenue.
|
Let's get the facts straight: These wind turbines will be at least 13 miles from the coast, appearing no larger than toothpicks, if visible at all. Moreover, as noted by the Conservation Law Foundation, "The wealthy are not more deserving to be free of toxins and pollution, but that’s exactly what they’re claiming in this lawsuit because blocking offshore wind will sentence other communities to years of pollution." Detailed debunking of the frivolous accusations against offshore wind projects can be found on this academic/community website: realoffshorewind.org.
Now, we urge you to stand with us, the volunteer members of Climate Action Rhode Island—along with community groups, scientists, labor groups, environmentalists, and common sense—in calling for the Little Compton and Newport groups to withdraw their lawsuits.
Time is of the essence in the fight against climate change. Delaying clean energy is equivalent to denying the urgency of the crisis. Together, let's preserve what matters more than a view from a mansion: a stable climate system where life on Earth can thrive. Please sign the petition below!

We, the undersigned, ask you to immediately withdraw your lawsuits against offshore wind projects before you further imperil future generations. We do so because the impacts on tourists and coastal residents of having to see offshore wind farms a dozen miles off the coast are simply not comparable to the impacts of the climate crisis and continued fossil fuel use.
These projects will bring over 700 MW of electricity to the New England grid, playing a crucial role in reducing air pollution and carbon emissions. The project’s jobs and many other benefits would be sabotaged by the lawsuits you have filed, as would the future that our children inherit. To do so in the name of historical preservation is dishonorable. Please withdraw your lawsuits before you cause any further damage to the pace of climate action or your own legacy.
