Help Shape the Development Constituency Application Process
Following the success of electing 4 Green MPs, we're setting our sights on the next step: gaining more MPs at the 2028/9 General Election. A key part of this journey is identifying Development Constituencies – local parties with the potential to become target constituencies for future elections.
Who is receiving this survey?
This survey is being sent to all key activists in the Green Party of England & Wales. While we’ve done our best to ensure the list covers all relevant people -- like local and regional party officers -- it may have gaps. If you believe someone in your local party or region who holds an officer position, or who is otherwise involved in your ambitions to win an MP at the next election, should also have a say in this consultation, please feel free to forward the survey link to them.
What are Development Constituencies?
Development Constituencies are seats with strong potential for growth and success. They will receive support from the national party to build the capacity and campaigning strength required to win an MP in the future. All target constituencies for the next general election (GE28/29) will first be Development Constituencies, with the exception of our defences.
While not all Development Constituencies will become targets for GE28/29, those who don't will follow a tailored pathway to continue building for future elections. Target constituencies – those where we have made a commitment to win – will be chosen closer to the election, likely around 2027, based on the progress made.
What support will Development Constituencies receive?
Local parties selected as Development Constituencies will be national strategic priorities and will benefit from support such as, although not limited to:
- A 'how to win an MP' guide, including all the best practice from Bristol, Brighton, North Herefordshire and Waveney Valley.
- General Election plans and literature templates.
- Training from experienced GE24 campaign staff.
- Support with hiring constituency campaign staff, fundraising, and comms strategy.
- Ongoing mentoring and guidance tailored to their needs.
How will they be selected?
Local parties will be invited to apply and will be assessed against criteria such as opponent activity, fundraising capacity, previous election success, volunteer strength, local party governance, willingness to form a close campaigning partnership with the national party, and others.
Proposed timeline (subject to changes):
- Consultation on Process: Jan 2025
- Expressions of Interest (EOI): Q1 2025
- Applications Open: Q2 2025 (with extensions for local parties involved in local elections until after May)
- Development Constituencies Announced: Q3 2025
Important note for Local Parties with elections in May 2025
If your local party has local elections in May 2025, your focus must remain on the local elections first. While we encourage you to complete the short Expression of Interest (EOI) in Q1, your full application for Development Constituency status should only be completed after the local elections.
Applications will remain open for local parties with elections until after May, and strong results in the local elections will strengthen your case in the application process. Previous election success will be an important criterion in the selection process, so the best thing for your future general election ambitions is to focus on achieving great results in the local elections this year.
How can you help?
Please complete this short survey to share your thoughts on the application process and the support you might need. Your input will help shape this process to ensure we meet your needs.
The survey will close on Friday, 31st January.
Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. Together, we can build a stronger Green presence in Parliament and beyond.
Kind Regards,
Miles Thorpe
