Michael Bean, who served on ANS's board of directors in the 1970s, was until this January the Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for Fish and Wildlife and Parks at the US Department of the Interior. Prior to joining Interior in 2009, he led the wildlife conservation efforts of the Environmental Defense Fund. He is the primary author of The Evolution of National Wildlife Law, now in its third edition, and a recognized expert on the Endangered Species Act.
