What will it take for us to win a clean, fair energy system?

With climate chaos accelerating everywhere, the need to rapidly slash our energy demand in the Global North and develop a clean energy system (not just clean electrical power, but elimination of fossil fuels from transport, buildings and industry too) could not be more evident. Yet the UK government is staking vast sums of public money on shoring up the fossil fuel and biomass industries with carbon capture and storage and fossil hydrogen, along with dangerous and environmentally devastating nuclear power, inextricably linked to the nuclear weapons industry.

A clean and fair energy system is technically feasible - the obstacles in our way are political, in the widest sense of the word. And our response must go way beyond just identifying what that energy system could look like - though this is vital work too, and is work that we need to do for ourselves with our scientist and our workplace allies. We must look to the kind of inclusive movement that can force the needed changes: the alliances that need to be built, the connections that need to be made, and the strategies and tactics that (maybe in combination) that give us the best chance of winning.

At this event, we aim to bring together campaigners from a wide range of areas (trade unionists, climate campaigners and activists, scientists and other experts) to build a strategy that identifies the components of a decarbonised energy system that works for everyone, and the action we will need to take to achieve it. We will aim to have practical plans to be followed up that can both win popular support and generate the pressure needed for change.

PROGRAMME
The day will be mainly participatory discussion but we have a range of invited speakers who will each make brief contributions to help us frame the discussion, illustrating key approaches and campaign priorities and giving their thoughts on how we can be most effective:

Suzanne Jeffery (Campaign Against Climate Change (CACC)/CACC Trade Union Group and National Education Union)
Tahir Latif (Greener Jobs Alliance)
Clara Paillard (Unite Grassroots Climate Justice Caucus)
Ellen Robottom (CACC/CACCTU)
Simon Pirani (activist, writer and researcher on transition away from fossil fuels)
Merry Dickinson (Stop Burning Trees Coalition
Rosie Hampton and Alex Lee (Friends of the Earth Scotland)
Charlotte Smith (Public and Commercial Services union and Greater Manchester Climate Justice Coalition)
Linda Walker (Greater Manchester Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament and Greater Manchester CJC)

Cordelia Newsome (Insure Our Survival and Greater Manchester CJC)
Nicky Crosby (HyNOT, XR Merseyside, Liverpool City Region CJC)
