United Campus Workers and Students for Belonging against SB120

We believe SB 120 will curtail free speech, limit academic freedom, attack marginalized communities, and make life worse for our students and campus workers. Call and tell your state senator that you are one of their constituents and clearly name each bill below and that you, as one of their constituents, want them to vote against it!

Once you enter your information you will be connected to your state senator. If you aren't registered to vote in Georgia, fill out the form using your school's address and contact 5 people you know who live in the state and ask them to participate! Familiarize yourself with the script below, and it will be available on the next page when you start to call!

Examples of points to make in your discussion:

  • SB 120 is a gross overreach by the government into my rights as a student and as a citizen of the United States. In its current form SB 120 does not carve out protections for the free speech of student organizations and if passed would threaten the safety of student groups across the state of Georgia.
  • The vague language of the bill means it poses a threat to student’s freedom of speech, leaves many questions around the enforcement of the bill being conducted fairly, and allows legislators to target anything they deem to fall under “DEI”.
  • The resources and student organizations offered by my school have supported me as a student, they have helped me develop as a professional, build a network of industry professionals, exposed me to a variety of perspectives and cultures that allowed me to grow as an individual.
  • Passing SB120 into law will result in the end of services and professional development programs that promote the creation of the future leaders of this state. Including programs that support veterans, survivors of sexual violence, and low-income students.
  • This bill may seriously impact our ability to recruit top students nationwide to attend universities in the state of Georgia, at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, and may further impact economic growth in the state.
