It's Time to Stop Peaker Plants Once and for All!

Yes, and we're extracting and transporting it in ever more new and more dangerous ways. Fossil fuel companies are continuing to seek permits for new and repowered fracked-gas power plants in New York State, despite the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act's (CLCPA) mandate for a zero-emissions electric sector in 2040 and its strong equity and justice provisions. Every time local citizens and environmental orgs defeat these corporations and their toxic energy, they come back from the dead, like zombies.

Currently there are three active proposals for new fracked-gas plants seeking state permitting that are deeply opposed by thousands of New Yorkers, and by the majority of New York's environmental organizations, because of their toxicity and their public health and climate impacts. Furthermore, these plants are not at all necessary for grid reliability - reliability will be achieved by the much cleaner and more affordable ConEd transmission upgrades that have already been approved!

With only 19 years to transition off of fossil fuels, New York must stop granting permits to fracked gas power plants NOW - and commit to transmission upgrades and climate solutions like renewable energy and battery storage.

The Clean Futures Act "Prohibits the development of any new major electric generating facilities that would be powered in whole or in part by any fossil fuel, unless the developer of such facility can demonstrate a need for such facility, and that there is no other reasonable method to satisfy such need."
