Broward Tenant Power Campaign

On March 6th, Broward DSA membership passed a resolution authored by Ciné J. (they/them) and Abbi T. (she/they) entitled "Resolution to Support Our Local Tenant Unions through a Broward Tenant Power Campaign" sponsored by John L. (he/him).
WHY TENANT POWER?
Did you know that Florida’s preemption law on tenant regulations, enacted in July 2023, blocks local governments from passing stronger tenant protections?“Ceiling Preemption” law prevents cities and counties from enacting renter protections that exceed state regulations, even if they feel tenants require additional safeguards.
- 95% of Broward County residents are unable to afford the current median sale price of a single-family home.
- Although LGBTQ+ youth represent 7% of the U.S. youth population, they account for 40% of homeless young people.
- Since 2018, the cost of a single-family house in Broward has gone up by 67% ($600,000 median sale price) in August.
HOW WILL WE CONTRIBUTE?
The McKenzie Project’s HOTS Program is a climate justice-informed supportive housing initiative aims to dismantle systemic barriers exacerbating housing and food insecurities among Black TGNCNB+ individuals in the South. We will be attending monthly Broward Tenant Meeting hosted by TMPI!
Also, we are organizing recurring cleanups on the 4th Sunday of every month to help maintain and revitalize apartments, waterways, parks, and historically Black and Brown neighborhoods.
